BOOK REVIEW: How to kill your family by Bella Mackie

To try and review this book without spoilers will be difficult but I have so much to say about this wonderful yet complicated book. Have a read of the synopsis and we shall continue this discussion after.

SYNOPSIS –

I have killed several people (some brutally, others calmly) and yet I currently languish in jail for a murder I did not commit.

When I think about what I actually did, I feel somewhat sad that nobody will ever know about the complex operation that I undertook. Getting away with it is highly preferable, of course, but perhaps when I’m long gone, someone will open an old safe and find this confession. The public would reel. After all, almost nobody else in the world can possibly understand how someone, by the tender age of 28, can have calmly killed six members of her family. And then happily got on with the rest of her life, never to regret a thing.

A wickedly dark romp about class, family, love… and murder.

I actually received this book from my sister for Christmas (awks). I hadn’t actually even heard of the book so it was a lovely surprise and I am always grateful to receive books, especially new titles to me. The title alone draws you in and the unknown of how dark this is going to get was exciting.

The book started off great. I liked the way the character was writing her story for the reader. I came to like Grace rather quickly and loved the excitement of the first murders she was to commit. I did then struggle in the second quarter. I found it slow, lots of names on repeat and lost my mojo with the book. It may be to do with the fact that a likeable character was killed off. I guess I felt a dislike towards Grace, maybe slightly pissed off that she was so obsessed with ticking people off her list that whether they were a good human didn’t come into consideration.

The book definitely picks up again with some ‘juicier’ murders and seeing the softer side of Grace. The little plot twist at the end was lovely and I can’t really talk about it without spoilers but I will say that I ended up feeling sorry for Grace. She had, for 80% of the book, been in control of everything and for her to lose the complete control and power over the murders she had commit was, well, kinda sad.

Overall, I would recommend this book as it’s different from anything I have ever read. At times, it just lost my attention slightly.
